What is the Midsummer Celebration?
In Latvia, every year people from cities escape to the countryside to celebrate the longest day of the Summer and the shortest night. The celebration is full of traditions and culture. People make cheese, drink beer, swing in massive swings, make flowery wreaths, jump over the fire, swim, dance till morning and then watch the sunrise together which symbolises entering a new phase of life.
How did it begin?
‘This idea of exploring my Latvian roots and traditions through theatre had been in my head for a long time. Latvia is where my identity and belonging comes from and I want to bring a little bit of this culture to North Devon.’ Estere Slare
